A battery management system overrides the alternator’s voltage regulator and increases voltage at the batteries.
There are several brands available and I generally recommend and fit the Adverc system – they’re well made, simple and ultra reliable.
Adverc’s have lost favour in the last 10-15 years as many of the alternators on modern engines have a dedicated domestic alternator with voltage regulators set higher than the traditional 14.4V Adverc factory setting. However with the rise in popularity of 6V ‘Trojan’ type batteries with recommended 14.8 charging voltage an Adverc can make significant improvements.
If the owner is fairly practical it’s also possible to adjust the Adverc to perform equilisation charge which can be very useful – such as for a Trojan type battery this is 16.20V.
If you think you have a problem with a Battery Management system or any charging or electrical problem on a narrowboat I’m happy to help.
**At the moment I have a 2nd hand Adverc system available with a 1 year warranty.**
